Still Hope for MMA in Ontario As most of you know that Premier McGunity has said that MMA is not a government priority right now. Also stating that the priority in Ontario is the building of a stronger economy. And of course we all know that sanctioning MMA in Ontario would help boost the economy in several different ways as mentioned in my previous article Tough Road for MMA. We have all seen the petitions going around for us to sign and state our reasons why the government should welcome this great sport to the province. (some in petitions in particular provided by SportsNet and W-1.) |
But the UFC among other MMA organizations have been reassuring us that MMA will in fact be sanctioned in Ontario within 2010. Whether it happens in 2010 or later, there is still hope for Ontario. I have received a letter forwarded by McGunity to Sophia Aggelonitis, who is the Minister responsible for the Athletics Control Act, which indicates a glimmer of hope.
"The government is aware of the growing popularity and increased interest in North America of professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events. Permitting MMA events is not a key government priority, but the government will continue to monitor this emerging sport."
Sophia Aggelonitis
Minister of Consumer Services.
In fewer words or less, I believe the sanctioning of MMA in Ontario is only a matter of time. Until then we wait...patiently...or at least try to.
